Horney, K. (1950). Neurosis and human growth. New York, NY: W.W. Norton & Company.

Dr. Karen Horney (1950) was a German psychiatrist, a founder of the Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis and a founder of the American Institute for Psychoanalysis. According to her books, every person possesses an outward camouflage of  inner conflicts. She names this camouflage: the neurotic false-self of the inner shoulds, the search for glory and the pride system involving self-hate.  This camouflage system imprisons the true-self, where authentic meaning and purpose of life resides. The false-self system brings the person an element of false-content, false-security and false-motivation for life which is why we are all so miserable,  anxiety riddles and reactive. From a psychiatrists view, Horney explains in layman’s term  man’s psychological predicament in three simple categories and why his/her search for self-realization is so imperative.
